Santiago de la Espada is a small municipality in the sierra of Jaén, Andalusia — remote enough that during the Spanish Civil War, local governing bodies were forced to issue their own emergency fractional currency when central supply of small change completely collapsed. These consejo municipal notes are among the most obscure of the 1936–1939 war issues, produced in tiny quantities, often by local printers with no specialist equipment, and circulating within a radius that might have covered only a handful of villages.
Survival rates are low simply because nobody thought to save them.
