Sindicat Agrícola de Santes Creus was one of hundreds of Catalan agricultural cooperatives and local bodies that issued emergency fractional currency during the Spanish Civil War, filling the acute small-change shortage that developed after metallic coin was hoarded or melted following the July 1936 uprising. The village of Santes Creus — best known for its medieval Cistercian monastery — had no banking infrastructure capable of meeting even basic transactional needs once the Republican peseta coinage effectively disappeared from circulation.
Catalogued under Gari Mon #1327-A, this emission is among the more obscure of the Catalan Guerra Civil issues, produced in very limited quantities for purely local use within the cooperative's membership.
