San Clemente is a small Castilian town in Cuenca province, and like hundreds of Spanish municipalities during the Civil War, its ayuntamiento issued emergency fractional currency when Republican-zone coinage disappeared from circulation almost overnight after July 1936. These local emissions — often printed on whatever card or paper stock was at hand — were technically provisional and legally marginal, but functionally essential for daily transactions in markets and shops.

The Gari Mon catalogue documents well over a thousand such municipal issues; this one's B suffix indicates a distinct type variant within the San Clemente 50 céntimos series, meaning at least two recognizably different emissions exist.
