Roquetes is a small municipality in the Baix Ebre comarca of Tarragona, and this 50 céntimos note belongs to the vast wave of local emergency currency — moneda local — that flooded Republican-held Catalonia and the Levant after July 1936. The collapse of small coin circulation following the outbreak of the Civil War forced hundreds of Spanish municipalities, many of them tiny, to print or stamp their own fractional notes. Turró catalogued over two thousand such issues, and this is one of them.
The thick card stock construction was a practical choice — municipalities often lacked access to proper banknote paper and sourced whatever was locally available.
