Roda de Isábena is one of the smallest municipalities in Spain — historically a village of a few hundred inhabitants perched in the Pyrenean foothills of Huesca — which makes its wartime paper money among the most locally specific emergency issues of the entire Civil War period. The Consejo Municipal issues from this region were produced under Republican-controlled Aragon during 1936–1937, when the collapse of small-denomination coinage created an acute transactional crisis that towns and villages were left to solve individually.
The Gari Montaner catalog remains the primary reference for Aragonese local issues, and the scarcity ratings assigned to Roda de Isábena notes are among the highest in the series.
