Riudecols is a small municipality in the Baix Camp comarca of Tarragona, and like hundreds of Catalan and Spanish towns during the Civil War, its local council issued emergency fractional currency when Republican-zone coinage essentially vanished from circulation after 1936. These municipal notes — collectively termed moneda de paper local or vales — were produced under chaotic conditions, often locally printed or even handwritten, with no central oversight of design or quality.

Turró's catalog documents over two thousand such issuers. That this note survives at all, given the destruction wrought by the post-war Francoist suppression of Republican municipalities, is the more remarkable fact.
