Obverse description Printed entirely in red on cream paper stock, the note is framed by a multi-register geometric border composed of chequerboard corner ornaments, triangular dentil bands, and scrolling foliate motifs. A central rectangular cartouche carries the denomination '50 céntimos' in large letterpress numerals, flanked by decorative bracket devices, with the issuer title 'Moneda Comercial de Rioja' set above in bold type and a validation clause with handwritten serial number below. The printer's imprint 'Tip. Diario de Almería' appears at the foot.

Reverse description The reverse is left entirely unprinted on the same cream paper stock, a practice consistent with the emergency fractional scrip issued by Spanish municipalities during the Civil War period to address the acute shortage of small-denomination coinage in local circulation.

Comments

During the Spanish Civil War, the collapse of small-change circulation forced hundreds of municipalities to issue their own emergency fractional notes — a phenomenon particularly acute across Andalusia, where Republican-controlled towns printed locally whatever denominations the war had driven out of use. This 50 céntimos piece is one such issue, produced by the Tipografía del Diario de Almería, a newspaper print shop pressed into service for municipal currency work. The Diario de Almería was a long-running provincial paper, and its presses were among the more capable in the province.

Rioja is a small agricultural municipality in Almería province, and its emergency notes survive in very limited numbers.
