Purchena is a small municipality in Almería province, and like hundreds of Spanish towns, it resorted to locally issued fractional paper during the Civil War when coins disappeared from circulation almost entirely — hoarded, melted, or simply gone. These emergency municipal issues, collectively known as billetes de necesidad, were typically produced by whatever printing resource was available locally: a rubber stamp, a typewriter, a small job press. The Consejo Municipal designation places this squarely in the Republican administrative structure of 1936–1938.
