Puig-reig is a small textile-industry town in the Berguedà comarca of Catalonia, and like hundreds of Catalan municipalities in 1937, its local government issued emergency fractional currency after the collapse of reliable coin supply in the early months of the Civil War. The Republican government's inability to maintain small change in circulation drove this wave of municipal paper — at its peak, well over a thousand Spanish localities were printing their own notes.

El Secretariat Català handled a significant volume of these municipal issues out of Barcelona. Finding a Puig-reig note in any condition takes effort; the print runs for villages of this size were modest, and most circulated hard before being discarded once the wartime emergency passed.
