Puerto Hurraco is a village in the province of Badajoz, Extremadura, with a population that likely never exceeded a few hundred. During the Spanish Civil War, hundreds of such municipalities issued their own paper fractional currency — locally called billetes de necesidad or vales — to cope with the near-total disappearance of small coinage from circulation. The Republican government had authorized local authorities to fill that gap, and the Alcaldía here did exactly that.
The Gari Monserrat catalog reference being incomplete signals how obscure this emission remains — few examples have surfaced, and documentation on print quantities is nonexistent.
