Comments

Pobla de Masaluca is a tiny village in the Terra Alta comarca of Tarragona, and its wartime issue of local fractional currency reflects the near-total collapse of small-denomination coinage across Republican Spain during 1936–37. The Generalitat de Catalunya authorized municipal councils to print their own emergency notes — *moneda de paper local* — precisely because the central government could not supply enough coin to keep local commerce functional. Hundreds of municipalities did exactly this, most using whatever printer was nearest.

Imprenta Bassa in Mora d'Ebre served several Terra Alta municipalities during this period, which gives the series a recognizable regional character among specialists of Civil War ephemera.
