El Poal is a small municipality in the Pla d'Urgell comarca of Lleida, and like hundreds of Catalan towns, it issued its own emergency fractional currency during the early months of the Spanish Civil War. The Republican government's failure to maintain adequate supplies of small coinage — silver and copper coins disappeared almost immediately as hoarding intensified through mid-1936 — forced local councils to improvise. These ajuntament-issued notes, collectively catalogued under the Turró system, vary enormously in production quality from town to town.
The official stamp is the only security measure, which was entirely typical of municipally produced xèrrics at this scale. Turró#1884 places it within a well-documented but modestly collected regional grouping.
