Pliego is a small municipality in Murcia, and like hundreds of Spanish towns during the Civil War, it issued its own emergency fractional currency in 1937 when the Republic's small-denomination coinage effectively vanished from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply consumed by wartime disruption. These municipal issues, known collectively as moneda local de necesidad, were produced under no central authority and with whatever printing resources the local council could access.

The Gari catalogue remains the primary reference for these Spanish local issues, and the 1134-A designation suggests at least one variant exists within the type. Production quantities for Pliego's emission are unrecorded, but survival rates for small-municipality issues like this tend to be low — most were redeemed or simply discarded once the war resolved local supply chains.
