One of hundreds of local emergency notes issued by Catalan municipalities during the Spanish Civil War, this 50 céntimos piece from Pineda emerged because the Republican government's inability to maintain adequate small-denomination coinage in circulation forced towns to print their own. The phenomenon was widespread enough to produce its own collecting category — "guerra civil local" — and Pineda's issues are among the more obscure entries within it.
Turró 1822 is the standard reference, though surviving population data for Pineda's emissions remains thin compared to larger nearby municipalities.
