Santa Perpètua de Mogoda was a small Catalan municipality that, like hundreds of others during the Civil War, issued its own emergency fractional currency after the Republican government's chronic shortage of small-denomination coinage left everyday commerce effectively paralyzed. These local issues — collectively catalogued under the Catalan term moneda local — were authorized under a 1937 decree but existed in a legal grey zone almost immediately, with the Generalitat repeatedly attempting to claw back monetary control from municipalities that had already printed and circulated their own paper.
Turró 1816 is among the less commonly encountered issues from the Barcelona province. The thick card stock used here was a practical choice given the note's small face value — flimsy paper would have disintegrated rapidly in daily use.
