Palautordera is a small municipality in the Vallès Oriental comarca of Catalonia, and like hundreds of similar towns it issued its own emergency fractional currency during the Spanish Civil War — a direct consequence of the acute coin shortage that followed the Republican government's loss of control over metal coinage in 1936. Gràfiques Unificades in nearby Granollers served as a regional printer for many of these local issues, which is why notes from otherwise unconnected towns across the comarca share recognizable typographic conventions.
Granollers itself was bombed in May 1938 — one of the most destructive air raids on a civilian target during the war. Whether this disrupted any late production runs from Gràfiques Unificades is not documented, but it is worth noting when assessing surviving stock from that printer.
