Palafrugell is a small Catalan coastal municipality, and like hundreds of Spanish towns during the Civil War, it issued its own emergency fractional currency in 1937 after the Republic's coinage supply collapsed almost entirely. These local issues — collectively known as moneda local or paper de guerra — were authorized under a Generalitat de Catalunya decree and were theoretically valid only within the issuing municipality's boundaries. In practice, enforcement was impossible.

Turró catalogued over 1,700 distinct Catalan municipal emissions from this period. That Palafrugell's 50 céntimos falls at #1741 places it toward the very end of that sequence — a minor issuer by volume, with correspondingly limited print runs.
