Palafolls is a small municipality in the Maresme comarca of Catalonia, and this note is exactly the kind of hyper-local emergency scrip that proliferated across Republican-held Spain after the military uprising of July 1936 drained coins from everyday commerce almost overnight. With metallic currency hoarded or simply unavailable, hundreds of Catalan ajuntaments commissioned their own fractional paper — often from whatever local printer happened to be nearby. In this case, Imprenta Montalt in the neighboring town of Malgrat handled the job.
Turró catalogues over two thousand such municipal issues; the sheer number of them is precisely why individual pieces remain affordable despite their scarcity in absolute terms.
