Oliana is a small municipality in the Alt Urgell comarca of Catalonia, and like hundreds of Catalan and Spanish towns during the Civil War, it issued its own paper fractional currency in 1937 when Republican-zone coinage effectively vanished from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply never minted in sufficient quantity. These municipal notes, collectively known as "moneda local" or "paper moneda," were a grassroots monetary response to a genuine transactional crisis, not a political statement in isolation.
Turró's catalog remains the primary reference for this sprawling category. Oliana's issues are among the less frequently encountered Alt Urgell municipals in the collector market.
