Novelda is a small municipality in Alicante province, and like hundreds of Spanish towns during the Civil War, it issued its own emergency fractional currency in 1937 when Republican-zone coinage effectively vanished from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply never minted in sufficient quantity. These local issues were authorized under a broader framework that allowed ayuntamientos to print their own vales, but quality, backing, and redemption guarantees varied wildly from town to town.
The Gari Montllor catalog remains the primary reference for Valencia region municipal issues. Survival rates for Novelda's series are uneven; lower denominations saw heavier daily use and suffered accordingly.
