Navahermosa is a small municipality in the Toledo province of Castile-La Mancha, and like hundreds of Spanish towns it resorted to locally-issued paper fractional currency during the Civil War after the Republic's small-denomination coinage vanished from circulation almost immediately after July 1936. These municipal emergency issues — collectively known as "cartones" or "billetes locales" — were produced under no central oversight, which means printing quality, paper stock, and authentication methods varied enormously from one ayuntamiento to the next. The official stamp here was essentially the only barrier against forgery, in a town where everyone knew everyone.
Survival rates for these hyper-local issues are unpredictable. Small runs, heavy daily use, and postwar indifference wiped out most of them.
