Montseny is a village in the Vallès Oriental comarca with a population that barely scraped a few hundred in the 1930s — the fact that it issued its own emergency paper currency during the Civil War is less surprising than it sounds. The Republican government's decree of May 1937 formalized a practice already well underway: municipalities across Catalonia had been filling the small-change vacuum left by hoarded metal coinage since mid-1936, when the wartime economy made bronze and silver disappear from circulation almost overnight.
Gràfiques Unificades in Granollers printed for dozens of these small municipal emitters across the region. The "Unificades" in the printer's name reflects the anarcho-syndicalist collectivization of the graphics trades under CNT-FAO control — the firm itself was a product of the same social upheaval that made these notes necessary.
