Montferri is a village in the Alt Camp comarca of Tarragona province with a population that barely reached a few hundred in the 1930s. During the Civil War, the Republican government authorized municipalities — down to the smallest — to issue their own fractional emergency currency when the hoarding of coins created a near-total breakdown in small-transaction commerce. Thousands of these ajuntament notes flooded Catalonia between 1936 and 1939, and Imprenta Solé of Tarragona printed a significant share of the provincial issues.
The sheer number of issuing bodies means collector interest is highly localized, but notes from villages this small tend to survive in genuinely low quantities — the redemption pool after the Nationalist victory was tiny, and many were simply discarded.
