Montblanc, the walled medieval town in the Conca de Barberà comarca of Tarragona, was one of hundreds of Catalan municipalities that issued emergency fractional currency during the Civil War after the Republic's small-denomination coinage effectively vanished from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply absorbed by wartime disruption. The Ajuntament contracted locally with Tipografia Monmany, which printed these notes in town rather than sending work to Barcelona.

Local production kept the series hyperlocal in distribution and accountability. Turró catalogues this as #1538 within a massive taxonomy of Republican municipal issues, most of which circulated only within the boundaries of the issuing municipality itself.
