Montañana was a small municipality northeast of Zaragoza that, like hundreds of Spanish villages during the Civil War, issued its own emergency fractional currency when coinage effectively vanished from circulation after 1936. The Republican government's inability to maintain a functioning small-denomination coin supply forced local councils — consejos municipales — to fill the gap with locally printed paper or card, valid only within their own jurisdictions.
Imprenta A. Figueres in Tàrrega printed for multiple Catalan and Aragonese localities during this period, which sometimes makes attribution tricky when notes lack clear issuer text. The Gari catalogue remains the primary reference for these Spanish Civil War local issues.
