Mont-roig del Camp, a small Catalan municipality in the Baix Camp comarca, issued emergency paper money — locally called moneda de necessitat — during the Civil War years when Republican Spain faced a severe fractional coin shortage. The central government's metal coinage had effectively dried up by 1936–37, forcing hundreds of towns to print their own low-denomination scrip to keep local commerce moving. Mont-roig was one of several hundred municipalities to do so, though its issues are notably scarcer than those of larger Catalan towns, reflecting the village's small population and limited print run.
The Turró catalogue, the standard reference for Catalan Civil War emergency issues, assigns this note a relatively high reference number within the series, consistent with the later wave of municipal emissions from 1937.
