Monforte de Lemos, a small Galician town, fell under Nationalist control early in the Civil War, yet municipal emergency issues like this one continued to circulate locally out of sheer necessity — the Republican peseta was distrusted, silver had vanished from trade, and the fractional coinage needed to make change simply did not exist. Municipal councils across loyalist and Nationalist zones alike printed their own cartones and vales to fill the gap.
The Gari Mon catalogue distinguishes two varieties for this denomination; the B suffix here indicates a second printing or design state, suggesting demand outlasted the initial run.
