Massalcoreig is a small municipality in Lleida, Catalonia, with a population that barely exceeded a few hundred during the 1930s. That it issued its own emergency paper money at all is the point of interest — during the Spanish Civil War, the Republican zone experienced a catastrophic collapse in small-denomination coinage, prompting thousands of municipalities, cooperatives, and trade unions to print their own local currency. These consell municipal emissions were technically illegal under central Republican banking law but were tolerated out of necessity.
