Massalcoreig is a tiny municipality in the Segrià comarca of Lleida, and like hundreds of similarly small Catalan and Aragonese towns, its local council issued emergency fractional currency during the Spanish Civil War after the Republic's small-change crisis of 1936 stripped everyday commerce of usable coin. The Consell Municipal's reliance on Imprenta Payà — a commercial print shop in Lleida rather than a specialist security printer — was entirely typical of the emergency, and the thick card stock reflects a practical workaround for paper that would survive repeated handling without disintegrating.

Turró catalogues this as #1484, placing it within the vast corpus of Catalan municipal issues documented by Andreu Turró i Ventura.
