Maspujols is a tiny municipality in the Camp de Tarragona comarca, and like hundreds of Catalan and other Republican-controlled towns during the Civil War, it issued its own fractional emergency currency when coin virtually disappeared from circulation in 1936–37. These locally produced notes — often called *moneda local* or *bitllets locals* — were authorized under the Generalitat de Catalunya's framework but designed, printed, and guaranteed entirely by the issuing municipality, which meant quality and redemption reliability varied enormously from town to town.
Maspujols had a population of only a few hundred at the time. The practical circulation of this note would have been extremely limited geographically.
