Mas de Barberans is a small municipality in the Montsià comarca of Tarragona, and like hundreds of Catalan and Spanish Republican councils during 1936–37, it issued its own emergency fractional currency — the moneda local — to address the acute shortage of metallic coinage that followed the disruption of normal banking after the July 1936 coup. The Republican government formally authorized municipal issues under a decree of late 1936, which legitimized what many councils were already doing informally.
Turró catalogues well over a thousand such issues. Most small-town emissions were produced in tiny runs, sometimes on whatever card stock was locally available, and Mas de Barberans was no exception.
