Marjaliza is a small municipality in the province of Toledo, and like hundreds of similar villages across Republican Spain, its town council issued emergency fractional paper money during the Civil War after metallic coin effectively vanished from circulation. These hyper-local emissions were produced under the most rudimentary conditions — hand-stamped, rubber-stamped, or typed on whatever paper was available — and authorized by decree of the Republican government in 1936 to address the acute small-change crisis.
The Gari Monerris catalog remains the standard reference for these Spanish municipal issues. The "#885-D" suffix indicates a documented variant within Marjaliza's emission — survivorship is low, as most were redeemed or simply discarded once the war ended their utility.
