Marçà is a village in the Priorat comarca of Tarragona with a population that barely exceeded a few hundred during the Civil War years. That a municipal council this small was issuing its own fractional currency in 1937 reflects the near-total collapse of small-denomination Republican coinage by that point — the guerra civil had driven metallic coin out of circulation through hoarding and melting, forcing hundreds of Catalan municipalities to print their own emergency scrip. These local emissions, catalogued collectively as "moneda local," were technically illegal under Republican treasury regulations but tolerated out of sheer necessity.
Imprenta Solé in Tarragona handled production for numerous surrounding municipalities, which accounts for the family resemblance across several Turró-listed pieces from this region. The official stamp is the primary — often the only — anti-counterfeiting measure, a telling indicator of how improvised the whole system was.
