Malgrat de Mar, a small coastal municipality north of Barcelona, issued its own fractional currency during the Civil War because the Republic's central supply of small-change coinage had effectively collapsed by 1937. Hundreds of Catalan municipalities did the same under a Generalitat framework that tolerated — if never formally sanctioned — this proliferation of local paper. The Ajuntament issues were fiduciary obligations against the town's own accounts, redeemable in theory but rarely honoured after the Nationalist victory.

Turró catalogues this as #1407, placing it within a documented but thinly surviving group. Municipal fractionals from towns this small were printed in short runs and circulated hard within a tight geographic radius.
