Maldà is a village in the Urgell comarca of Catalonia with a population that barely reached 400 during the 1930s. Like hundreds of other Catalan and Spanish municipalities, it issued its own emergency fractional currency during the Civil War after the Republic's small-denomination coins vanished from circulation almost immediately in 1936 — hoarded, melted, or simply lost in the chaos. These local notes, collectively called *moneda de necessitat*, were a grassroots monetary stopgap, not a centrally coordinated policy.
Production was entirely local: thick card stock, typically a rubber or hand stamp as the sole security feature. Turró catalogued over 1,400 such issues, and Maldà's sits near the end of that list.
