Maials is a small municipality in the Segrià comarca of Lleida, and like hundreds of Catalan and Aragonese towns during the Civil War, its local council issued emergency fractional currency in 1937 when Republican-zone coinage effectively vanished from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply absent. These municipal notes were a practical stopgap, not an ideological statement, and most were produced in tiny print runs for purely local use.
Survival rates for Maials issues are low. Notes of this kind rarely left the immediate area and were typically redeemed or discarded once the military situation made them worthless.
