Lleida's wartime municipal issues of 1937 belong to a broader phenomenon of Republican-zone local currency that emerged after July 1936, when the collapse of normal banking channels and the hoarding of metal coinage left ordinary commerce functionally paralyzed. Hundreds of Catalan municipalities printed their own paper fractional money under sanction from the Generalitat, each contracting whatever local or regional printer could be secured.
Fotolitografía Barguñó was a Barcelona commercial lithography house — not a specialist security printer — and the photolithographic process used here was chosen for speed and availability rather than anti-counterfeiting robustness. These notes circulated under conditions where forgery was the least of anyone's concerns.
Lleida fell to Nationalist forces in April 1938, at which point all Republican municipal scrip was immediately demonetized.
