Las Mesas is a small municipality in the Cuenca province of Castilla-La Mancha, and like hundreds of similarly sized Spanish towns, its ayuntamiento issued emergency fractional currency during the Civil War years after the Republic's small-denomination coinage disappeared from circulation almost immediately in the summer of 1936. These municipal vales were locally produced stopgaps — printed, stamped, or handwritten on whatever card or paper was available — and carry no central authority behind them beyond the seal of the issuing town council.
The Gari Moné reference is incomplete, which is unsurprising for Las Mesas. Documentation for the smaller Cuenca municipios remains patchy, and unlisted or partially catalogued pieces surface occasionally from provincial collections.
