La Sénia is a small municipality in the Montsià comarca, far enough from Barcelona that the Republican central authorities' attempts to regulate local emergency currency had little immediate effect. This 50 céntimos note is one of several denominations issued by the town's ayuntamiento in 1937 under the broader Catalan wartime practice of locally-issued paper scrip — the bitllets locals — which proliferated across hundreds of municipalities after the Civil War disrupted coin circulation almost entirely.
Imprenta Solé in Tarragona handled the printing, a regional commercial press responsible for a number of similar municipal issues catalogued in the Turró series.
