La Selva del Camp is a small municipality in the Camp de Tarragona comarca, and like hundreds of Catalan towns during the Spanish Civil War, its ajuntament issued emergency fractional currency — cartrons de guerra — when the Republic's central supply of small-denomination coinage collapsed after 1936. These local issues were produced under almost no regulatory oversight, often by village printers working with whatever materials were available, which accounts for the thick card stock construction. Turró catalogues thousands of such pieces, and the vast majority circulated only within the issuing municipality's immediate area.
