La Riera de Gaià is a small municipality in the Camp de Tarragona, and this note is a product of the peseta crisis that gripped Republican-held Catalonia from 1936 onward. The collapse of small-denomination coinage in circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply absent — forced hundreds of Catalan ajuntaments to print their own fractional paper. Imprenta Solé in Tarragona supplied several of these municipal issues, which accounts for the shared visual grammar among notes from the surrounding comarca.
At 60 × 32 mm, this is among the smallest formats in the wartime Catalan municipal series — closer to a tram ticket than a banknote.
