La Riba is a small municipality in the Alt Camp comarca of Tarragona province, and like hundreds of Catalan and Spanish towns during the Civil War, it issued its own emergency fractional currency when the Republic's small-change shortage became acute after 1936. The metal coinage had largely disappeared — hoarded, melted, or simply absent — and the central government's response was too slow and too limited to reach every municipality. Local councils filled the gap themselves.
Imprenta Solé of Tarragona handled production for numerous surrounding towns during this period, which means the printing quality is generally competent but undistinguished. Turró catalogs this as #2099.
