La Ràpita dels Alfacs — now known simply as Sant Carles de la Ràpita — was one of hundreds of Catalan municipalities that issued emergency fractional paper currency during 1937 when the Republic faced a chronic shortage of metallic coin. These local emissions were authorized under Generalitat de Catalunya oversight but produced to each town's own specifications, which accounts for the extraordinary variety in quality and format across the series.

Imprenta Avant was a Barcelona printer with Republican affiliations, responsible for a number of similar municipal issues from the period. Production ceased as Nationalist forces advanced into Catalonia in 1938–39, and most of these small-denomination notes were demonetized and destroyed shortly after.
