La Llagosta is a small municipality in the Vallès Oriental comarca north of Barcelona, and like hundreds of Catalan towns in the summer of 1936, its ajuntament resorted to issuing its own fractional emergency currency after the outbreak of the Civil War caused metallic coin to vanish almost immediately from circulation. These municipal paper issues — collectively known as moneda local or paper moneda — were produced under wildly varying conditions, with some councils printing on proper stock and others resorting to whatever card or paper was at hand.

Turró catalogued over 1,400 distinct Catalan municipal issues from this period. The La Llagosta 50 céntimos is among the more obscure entries, issued by a town whose wartime population was a few thousand at most.
