La Granja d'Escarp is a small municipality on the Segre river in Lleida, and like hundreds of Catalan and Aragonese towns, its revolutionary council issued emergency fractional currency during the early months of the Civil War — 1936–37 — when Republican-held territories faced an acute shortage of small-denomination coinage. The Consell Municipal Antifeixista designation places this squarely in that first period of collectivized local authority, before the May 1937 events in Barcelona began consolidating control back toward the Republican government in Valencia.
The Turró catalogue documents well over a thousand such local emissions; this one, at fifty céntimos, addresses the most practically urgent gap in daily commerce.
