Just Desvern is a small municipality in the Baix Llobregat comarca, southwest of Barcelona. Like hundreds of Catalan towns during the Civil War, it issued its own fractional paper currency in 1937 to address the acute shortage of metallic coin — silver and copper had largely vanished from circulation by mid-conflict, hoarded or melted down. These municipally issued notes, collectively catalogued under the broader *bitllets de necessitat* phenomenon, were legal only within the issuing municipality and had no validity elsewhere.
Imprenta El Secretariat Català handled a significant volume of this emergency local currency work for smaller Catalan municipalities, which accounts for a degree of typographic similarity across issues from different towns in the series.
