One of hundreds of local emergency notes — billetes de necesidad — issued by Spanish municipalities during the Civil War after the Republic's central coin supply collapsed almost immediately in 1936. Jaén, under Republican control throughout the war, issued fractional notes like this one to cover the void left by hoarded and melted coinage. Municipal issues at this denomination were essentially fiduciary tokens on paper, accepted locally and worthless the moment the front moved.
The Gari Mon dual reference (785A-B) indicates two distinct varieties exist, typically differing in ink color, serial format, or paper stock rather than design.
