Hostalets de Pierola is a small municipality in the Anoia comarca, west of Barcelona, with a pre-war population well under a thousand. That a village this size issued its own emergency fractional currency in 1937 reflects just how completely the Republican monetary system fragmented during the Civil War — the Generalitat de Catalunya authorized local councils to issue small-denomination notes (moneda local) to address a chronic shortage of coin, most of which had vanished from circulation by hoarding and wartime disruption.
Imprenta El Secretariat Català handled a significant share of these municipal commissions out of Barcelona, producing notes for dozens of Catalan councils. Survival rates for issues from small municipalities are genuinely poor — low print runs, no banking infrastructure to preserve reserves, and the post-war Francoist suppression of anything associated with Catalan Republican administration all worked against it.
