Guissona is a small market town in the Lleida comarca of Catalonia, and like hundreds of similarly sized municipalities, it issued its own fractional paper money during the Spanish Civil War after the Republic's coinage effectively vanished from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply never replaced. These local emisiones municipales were a patchwork solution, authorized loosely by the Generalitat de Catalunya, with each town responsible for its own design, printing, and redemption.
Turró catalogues this 50 céntimos as #1226, placing Guissona among the smaller and less-documented issuers. Surviving examples are scarce simply because production runs for minor municipalities were small and redemption after the war was erratic at best.
