Guadalajara's municipal fractional notes of 1937 belong to the sprawling Republican emergency coinage substitute program — the billetes de necesidad — issued after silver and copper coins vanished from circulation almost entirely in the opening year of the Civil War. Hundreds of Spanish municipalities printed their own small-denomination paper rather than leave markets paralyzed. Guadalajara was under Republican control until March 1939, when Nationalist forces took the city in the final weeks of the war.
The Gari Mon catalogue distinguishes two varieties for this value; the B suffix here signals a secondary emission, likely differing in serial format or paper stock from the first. Provincial and municipal issues at this denomination level were heavily used for daily transactions and rarely survived in quantity.
